Every once in a while, you come across a concept that completely pulls you in — something that feels genuinely different while still being effortless in how it presents itself. That was my experience when I first discovered Color Magic, a unique addition to the Oceanside coffee scene.
It initially popped up as a recommended follow on Instagram, where the logo immediately caught my attention, followed by the hypnotic design of the coffee bags. After spending more time exploring the website, it became clear that this was not your typical project within the San Diego specialty coffee world — an ever-changing lineup of lightly roasted coffees that span a variety of origins. When I saw that the owner, Siri, offered private bookings at her coffee studio, I knew I had to check it out, and scheduled a visit with a couple of friends.
The experience takes place at Dear Tomorrow, located just off Highway 101 in Oceanside, tucked beside the transit center parking lot in a quiet, unassuming area. The space itself is a converted historic home that now functions as a co-op art studio and coworking environment.
Walking inside feels like stepping into another era, with artwork from a variety of local artists covering nearly every wall. There is also a large outdoor area that works well for private events, gatherings, or creative meetups. If you have a creative brain and want to host a magical event with friends, this is an excellent setting to consider.
We were welcomed in the entryway with a freshly prepared cold Colombian coconut co-ferment — perfect for a warm, sunny afternoon in coastal North County San Diego. A fun detail worth mentioning: the pink booth near the entrance was sourced from the recently closed Cap'n Keno's in Encinitas.
The actual coffee studio is located upstairs, offering a small and intimate setting with seating for about five to six people. The space is filled with equipment that any specialty coffee enthusiast would appreciate: a white La Marzocco GS3, a Mazzer Philos grinder, multiple pour-over setups, and an Aillio Bullet roaster alongside burlap sacks of carefully sourced green coffee.
One of the more personal touches is selecting your drinkware from a collection of handmade glasses made by the artists at Dear Tomorrow, before sitting back and watching Siri prepare your order. It is a small detail that adds something genuinely memorable to the visit.
Siri Simran, the founder of Color Magic, brings a deep level of experience and intention to everything she does. She spent over a decade at Lofty Coffee Co. and most recently served as their Director of Coffee. Her approach to sourcing is highly intentional — she works closely with specialized importers to ensure every coffee meets an exceptional standard.
I was curious how long it takes for a roaster to feel comfortable relying more on intuition rather than focusing on every small detail. She mentioned it took about three years, which equated to nearly 7,500 roasts. That number is hard to wrap your head around, but it also explains the confidence and clarity you taste in every cup.
The coffee tasting experience itself makes the trip to Oceanside more than worthwhile. Guests are presented with a curated lineup of coffees that can be prepared in a variety of ways — from espresso to pour-over and beyond. For those looking beyond traditional options, there are always a few creative specialty drinks available as well.
While you wait, you can snack on a beautiful tray of light bites. The pacing is relaxed and unhurried, which is exactly the point. This is not a place you stop into for five minutes. It is a place you linger.
I opted for a cortado using the Gateway blend, a collaboration with Friends of Friends. The blend combines a Colombian coffee roasted by Siri with an Ethiopian roasted by Friends of Friends, resulting in a cup that showcased both fruity brightness and a smooth, creamy body. It was balanced, expressive, and memorable.
Before leaving, I picked up a bag of decaf beans along with one of the handmade cappuccino glasses — both of which I have been very happy with since.
Without question, yes. If you are looking for a more intimate and elevated coffee experience in Oceanside — or anywhere in San Diego — Color Magic is absolutely worth your time. Siri also hosts cuppings, which are another great way to experience her work in a more interactive and educational setting.
